Contextual Advertising

A form of online advertising that is usually used for websites that are content-based, contextual advertising consists of targeted ads that show up depending on the content of the website. You may have come across target advertising any time you visit a blog or read one of your emails. Contextual advertising will be located in or around the content on the page in the form of short ads including links.

Technologically based, contextual advertising is just right whenever you want to send targeted messages to your viewers in real time. After all, if a user is already conversing about a particular subject or searching for information on any given topic, then the chances are very good that he or she will click on your ad containing targeted keywords.

The Process Involved With Contextual Advertising

A contextual advertising system will start off by scanning all of the text on any given webpage in order to identify some of the commonly used keywords or keyword phrases. Once the system finds the keywords, it will them pull up target ads that are based upon the content that the user is viewing. For example, if you are looking at a webpage on gardening the contextual advertising system will pull up ads for everything from gardening magazines to garden supply websites. The entire process is both genius and very effective for advertisers, never mind the fact that contextual advertising is incredibly convenient for website viewers because they basically end up with specialized information and shopping opportunities via links that are only a click away.

Types Of Contextual Advertising

  • Inline Ads – These are links that appear within the text throughout the content of a website. As a user looks through a webpage, information will pop up as they move their mouse over particular keywords or keyword phrases. These links can either pull up a short description that is helpful to the viewer or they can click on the link to be taken to a page with further information or to be routed to another website.
  • Sponsored Links – This form of contextual advertising gives the advertiser the freedom to choose where they would like the ads to be placed. Generally, these ads contain links within the text on the page that are related to the information on the website.
